Cosy steakhouse with dim lighting and earnest service. We came to try their aged beef and ordered a cape grim rib eye 40 days aged. Steak was excellent n perfectly cooked to medium rare. However it was under seasoned n the steak did not have a good crust. Beef tartare was chunky the way we liked it but taste was marred by too much mayo. The mushrooms for side order were perfectlt delicious! For a specialty steakhouse, I wish they would use much higher quality steak knives. Not up there with the best steakhouses in the world but probably as good as it gets in launceston. Worth a visit for a good value meal of Robbin Island or Cape Grim produce. 650g bone in ribeye, beef tartare, mushrooms and a glass of malbec - AU$217 for 2 people
We went to the black cow on a recommendation from a friend and it did not disappoint! A lovely atmosphere inside, complemented by a ‘black’ theme. The food was delicious and without any fault. We had kingfish sashimi which was light and fragrant, also two of the scallops - cooked perfectly with a reasonable price tag. Also 2 scotch fillets, cooked to a perfect rare - rested well with fantastic sauces to accompany. Also a crème brûlée with a rhubarb pastry, the sweet and sour were complimentary and a fantastic combination. A bottle of local frecyinet wine to accompany was the cherry on top… 10/10 The owner was charming and attentive, made us feel very welcome and appreciative.
A stable purveyor of steaks, who also kindly reminds you that other menu options are available, too, would you be in the mood for something less beefy. They also set the table for a solo diner with a selection of reading materials. In the age of smartphones that feels quaint, but also welcoming and caring. The same attention to detail must have shaped the wine list offering more and less rare, more and less local, more and less affordable wines by the glass. I opt for eye fillet with béarnaise and a glass of Tasmanian Malbec - and am very happy with what I get. The staff is lovely, the vibe is relaxed, good times!
Silver service. Young man was doing well to make sure I was accommodated, he just got the butter knife mixed for the mains knife. Prices for quality were in par with expectation, and thankfully the medium-rare scotch fillet was juicy, fatty, but cooked evenly. Nice lux meal for one ; they even gave me some books to read while waiting (it’s what they do for single diners), though it was too dark to read anything. The other options were tantalising but it would be better shared. Atmosphere was nice, a little dark as mentioned, and somehow it felt noisy though it was full.
The food is nice but we encountered a really annoying problem. The two ladies sat next to us used flashlight to take a picture, and as far as I know in such a restaurant it’s not suitable to use flashlight. They asked the staff for help, then all those two customers and the staff witnessed my friend’s eyes were hurt by strong flashlight, but no apology. My friend then closed her eyes in a pain. During the dining I asked a staff who volunteered to speak Chinese Mandarin to us “还要点别的吗”although I don’t think it’s proper to assume us speaking Mandarin by appearance, and described the situation to her. We received very cold and dry “sorry”, then nothing else. By the way, the gap between tables is so limited(about only 10cm) and I think that’s why abuse of flashlight can hurt someone else. Our privacy cannot be guaranteed either since what you’re saying can be clearly heard by the people sitting next to you. Worse still, the staff served us the wrong cuisine in the first time and didn’t notice that, which I think it’s not professional. If this restaurant is not pricey and expensive, I will not be too picky. But given its price, we shouldn’t deserve such treatment. Btw the bread for appetizer is even charged instead of free, I live in Canberra and usually visit Sydney and I think I never meet this before, which is surprising. Anyways I totally understand in Launceston there are not many options, but if I were a resident here I will definitely not come back. Disappointing and feel overlooked. I seldom give bad reviews.
