I had such a positive experience with Greenville County Animal Care and wanted to share it. I arrived on a Friday afternoon shortly after they opened with a stray dog named Oreo who desperately needed help. He had been running the streets for several days, was covered in ticks and cuts, and needed to get somewhere safe. Before I even checked in, an off duty employee noticed us and came over to greet both me and Oreo with genuine kindness and concern. That first interaction immediately put me at ease. I waited a little over an hour outside, and I appreciated that they had fresh water available for any dogs waiting to be seen. Even though there were several people ahead of me, I never felt forgotten. When it was our turn, they brought us into a private intake room where I could drop Oreo’s leash and let him decompress. The moment he realized he was finally safe, he laid down on the floor and fell asleep. It was heartbreaking and reassuring all at once. Finch, the employee who helped me, was exceptional. They scanned Oreo for a microchip, explained every step of the process, answered all of my questions, and were incredibly understanding about my concerns. I had already contacted numerous rescues, posted him in local Facebook groups, and exhausted every option I could think of before bringing him to Greenville County Animal Care. I felt awful having to take him there, but the staff reassured me that I had done the right thing for both his well being and my family’s safety. I later learned they had only one kennel space available, yet they worked hard to make sure this sweet dog had a safe place to stay. Every interaction I had with the team was compassionate, professional, and genuinely caring. Unfortunately, although Oreo was microchipped, the registered address no longer existed and every phone number associated with the chip had been disconnected. It was heartbreaking because there was no way to reunite him with his owner. If you’re looking for an older dog who is an absolute sweetheart and desperate to be part of a family, Oreo is your guy. Please go adopt him. He has such a gentle spirit, and I hope he gets the happy ending he deserves. If you take only one thing away from my experience, let it be this: please keep your dog’s microchip information up to date. A microchip only works if the contact information is current. It could be the difference between your dog coming home or ending up in a shelter with no way to reach you. Thank you, Finch, and the entire Greenville County Animal Care team, for treating both Oreo and me with so much compassion. I’m grateful for the care you provided during a difficult situation.
I recently tried to bring in a sick feral cat to get help, and the experience was extremely disappointing. I carefully read the website and followed the instructions, with the exception of using a trap. The cat was very friendly, so I believed a standard crate would be acceptable—but that turned out not to be the case. Instead of offering guidance or showing any compassion, the two women at the front desk were incredibly rude and dismissive. One of them acted as if simply being there at 5 a.m. to check in animals was some kind of extraordinary favor, rather than part of her job. Both employees snapped at me, showed no willingness to help, and even threatened to call the police. I tried to explain that their website was unclear and misleading regarding requirements and timing, but they had no interest in listening. There was zero empathy for the situation—just hostility. This was especially upsetting given that the cat I brought in was clearly sick and in need of help. The lack of compassion and professionalism was shocking. I left feeling disgusted and discouraged, and more importantly, worried about an animal that needed care.
The staff here are amazing truly caring, kind, and dedicated to every single animal that comes through their doors. You can tell they love what they do, and it shows in how happy, healthy, and loved the pets are. I come often just to spend time with the dogs, give them treats, and take them on walks, and every visit is such a joy. The whole place feels welcoming, warm, and full of love. If you want to support a group that genuinely puts animals first, this is it and if you want to leave with a happy heart (and maybe a new furry friend), this is the place to be!
Just got my new companion from here and it was the best interaction with the staff. They truly care about the animals there and were very knowledgeable and friendly. If I ever get another fur baby, I'll be looking here first!
We went this week to help a neighbor find a new dog. We have adopted 3 dogs of our own from here and absolutely love this place. You can see that these people truly love these animals and want to find each them a "fur ever" home!
